The history of RD Rýmařov s. r. o. commenced almost four decades ago in one of the crucial years in the Czech history. In 1968, the company Rudné doly Jeseník (Ore Mines Jeseník) had to face the issue of finding employment for workers from the ore mines that had been gradually closed down in the Rýmařov region. The region was rich in wood and an idea which could also solve the lack of new housing in former Czechoslovakia had come into the world. Everything was being prepared for the commencement of production of wooden houses in Rýmařov.
The Czechoslovak Union of Architects announced, at the instigation of the Ore Mines, a competition for the license to manufacture houses from lightweight prefabricated wood. The committee finally settled for the German company OKAL – Otto Kreinbaum. RD Rýmařov s. r. o. acquired the license for the manufacturing and assembly system as well as design documents for several types of standard houses from this company. The winning company was also one of the main suppliers of the manufacturing technology. The houses quickly gained popularity and the name of the German company, OKAL, became widely popular. The validity of the licence expired at the end of 1970s and the label could no longer be officially used, however, the term “okál” lived its own life among people even in the 1980s.
The foundation stone of the Rýmařov facility for the production of wooden houses was laid in mid-1969, and soon about a thousand people found work there. The production was aimed mainly at the domestic market. The clients of RD Rýmařov s. r. o. included in addition to private citizens also cooperatives, state farms, as well as industrial companies which saw this as a way of building good-quality corporate apartments in a quick and affordable manner. Besides family houses, lodging houses, kiosks, holiday cottages or construction sites sheds were assembled in Rýmařov.
As the factory grew more and more successful, efforts were made for the facility to become independent and separated from the Ore Mines. These efforts succeeded only after the fall of the Communist Regime. An independent state company RD Rýmařov s. r. o. was established on 1 January 1990. Its management immediately started to plan what production should continue and for whom. The management fairly quickly managed to find markets in Germany. The success of the German market, however, was conditional on a number of innovations, extending the range of products and increasing the quality. All changes in the company were made while in full operation.
In February 1993, the company became private – the company Rodinné domky s. r. o. bought RD Rýmařov s. r. o. in a public tender. Further changes and expansion of the product range were carried out up to its present form. The result is a much wider range of modifications from which the customers may choose exactly what they need. RD Rýmařov s. r. o. currently manufactures the most modern houses whose quality, architectural variability and meeting of environmental requirements fully comply with all international standards.
2000 brought another historic breakthrough – RD Rýmařov has introduced a new building system called Lord which marked the beginning of a new generation of prefabricated houses. Designers and engineers succeeded in an almost impossible task – they created larger living space within a smaller footprint. When compared to the older house types, the new version makes a better use of the attic where the raising of the exterior walls got rid of the usual “dead spots”. The innovations did not stay unnoticed by the public and professionals. In 2000, the house Lord Premio 2000 from RD Rýmařov was awarded a special prize in the survey House of the Year conducted by the magazine Můj dům. Three years later, RD Rýmařov s. r. o. received the jury award in the same survey, this time with the new line of houses KUBIS.
Wooden houses have been permanently very popular abroad, but recently, we have recorded a significant grow in popularity even in the Czech Republic. No wonder. Modern wooden houses meet all the requirements for modern living. They are lightweight and very durable; their advantage is their long life, no cracks and resistance to even the harshest acidic environment. Wooden houses are also environmentally friendly – their production does not burden the environment. Since 2000, all products from Rýmařov comply with all EU regulations.
RD Rýmařov s. r. o. has been successfully expanding to foreign markets. It has been a long-term success on the most demanding market in Europe, i.e. in Germany. The houses produced in Rýmařov can proudly boast by the prestigious sign of quality RAL assigned to German prefabricated houses. Our wooden houses have recently found markets in Greece, Austria, Switzerland and Slovakia. We have also recorded demand from other European countries. The single most important client for RD Rýmařov s. r. o. remains the domestic market.
